Ben Luke talks to Nick Cave about his influences—together with these from the worlds of literature, music, movie and, after all, artwork—and the cultural experiences which have formed his life and work.

Cave, born in Fulton, Missouri, US, in 1959, creates elaborate sculptures and found-object installations. He’s greatest recognized for his Soundsuits, which mix sculpture, efficiency, trend and social activism. His work veers from the intimate and homespun object to huge installations and performances involving a number of members.
Amongst a lot else, he discusses his early encounters with the work of Anselm Kiefer and Barkley Hendricks; his ardour for the couture of Elsa Schiaparelli; the enduring affect of George Clinton’s Parliament/Funkadelic; and a seminal sequence within the movie The Wiz (1978).
